Detoxification.

Detoxification (Detox) is the process of clearing a substance and its short-term effects from the system. Individuals may find one or more from a range of different approaches are most useful to help them initially become drug free. Some will reduce their drug use slowly over a long period of time to minimise the symptoms of withdrawal, whilst others may wish to stop their drug use immediately and manage the unpleasant but relatively short-term effect (cold turkey).

Whichever method is chosen, most people need a range of support during this difficult time. Agencies work together to provide a mix of expertise that is most suited to each person undertaking detox, usually a combination of assessment, stabilisation, counselling, drop-in, complementary therapies and relapse prevention, which are provided in the home or local community.

Access to these services is by referral. The referral process is flexible and aims to respond to the needs of each person, so can be made by the individual themselves, a GP or any of the agencies involved. Referrals can be made in person, by telephone or formal letter.
