Description
Methadone is an opioid that is artificially produced. It is prescribed to help heroin users stabilise their lives and health. Methadone is available as a blue or green syrup or linctus. Tablets are also available.
How it is used
Methadone is swallowed, usually as a single daily dose.
Effects
Methadone does not produce a 'high' like heroin and the effects last up to 24 hours. The effect on a person who is dependent on opiates is to make them feel normal and enable them to minimise the unpleasant withdrawal effects of ceasing heroin use.
The Law
Methadone is a Class A drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act, with high penalties for its possession and supply.
Risk Reduction
Prescribed Methadone should not be mixed with street drugs to avoid the risk of accidental overdose.
Prescription Methadone users in possession of a UK driving licence are required to disclose their use to the DVLA. A medical may be required to evaluate whether you can continue to be licensed to drive.
