First Aid.

If you are with someone who is unconscious it is important to check three things:
  • Is their airway clear?
  • Are they breathing?
  • Do they have a pulse?
If the answer to all of these is YES, make sure they are lying on their side, to stop them choking if they vomit.

If the answer to any of these is NO, the 999 operator will tell you what to do.

Call an ambulance immediately, 999 calls are free from a payphone. Answer the questions asked and listen to the operator for advice.

If it is appropriate (e.g. not in a heated environment such as a nightclub) keep the unconscious person warm and make sure someone stays with them.

First Aid Courses

You may wish to consider taking a course in First Aid to help you feel more confident and able to offer assistance if you come across a medical emergency.

A number of organisations run recognised courses, including The British Red Cross Society and St John Ambulance. The content includes how to deal safely with burns, choking, injuries and heart attacks, as well as loss of consciousness.
